BRIEF HISTORY:
Malta consists of three main Islands: Malta, Gozo and Comino
with a total of 122 sq miles surrounded by the clean and clear
turquoise Mediterranean Sea.
It is centrally located in the middle of the Mediterranean 58
miles south of Sicily (Italy).
Population is 350,000. Its independent, democratic, with a history
that dates thousands of years. Historic buildings still exist
around the Islands, amongst which few pre-historic temples which
date about 5000 years.
It was invaded by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Turks,
French, Germans and English. They all left these islands with
layers of history.
Traditions are well kept and maintained although modern technology
and customs blended with them in the daily life. Because of the
fresh air and beautiful climate, the Maltese enjoy one of the highest
health standard in the world. Economically, it's rated one of the
best in the Mediterranean region.
Because of their bravery during World War II, King George VI awarded
Malta and its people the George Cross which symbol still appears on
the white and red national Flag.
Valletta is the Capital (named after Grand Master La Valette). Mdina
is the old capital with beautiful historic buildings. The island of
Gozo, although so close, is rather unique and peaceful. It is rich
with historical buildings and unspoiled landscape, scenic spectacle
and was the land were the nymph Calypso held the wandering Odysseus
in her thrall for seven years.
The Maltese are a proud and feisty people with their own language,
culture, national airline and, yes, style of driving which makes the
French look civilized in comparison. They are supposed to drive on
the right but many drive wherever .... they joke that they drive
in the shade!
Malta is called "The Island of Sunshine and History" and rightly so.
It is said that the first time you visit the Islands you go as a
tourist, the second time you go as a friend. Enjoy your flight around
my beautiful Home Land.
